Which License Are You Pursuing?

Both paths begin with the same pre-license foundation. What happens after class depends on the type of license you're pursuing.

Primary License

General, Plumbing, Electrical & HVAC Contractors

  • Monday–Wednesday, 7:30 AM–5:00 PM
  • Thursday, 7:30 AM–12:30 PM
  • 2 years of qualifying experience required
  • Business & Law exam required
Specialty License

Subcontractor

  • Monday–Wednesday, 7:30 AM–5:00 PM
  • Three full classroom days
  • No prior experience required
  • No Business & Law exam required

What You'll Learn.

The course covers the business side of becoming a contractor, including: licensing requirements, accounting and taxes, bidding and estimating, hiring and employee management, contracts and legal basics, and day-to-day business operations.

Is this course required for a Utah contractor license?

Utah contractor applicants must complete an approved pre-license education course. This course is designed to satisfy that education requirement.

What's the difference between a primary contractor and specialty license?

General, plumbing, electrical and HVAC contractor licenses follow the primary-license path and require qualifying experience plus the Business & Law exam. A Specialty license is limited to a specific trade and does not require the exam or prior experience.

What should I bring to class?

Bring a photo ID, something to take notes with, and your questions. Course materials are provided.

Is the class in person?

Yes. Students attend in person. Depending on the location, some instruction may be presented live by video from another ABC Utah classroom.
